Dr. Connolly
Scabies is a skin infection caused by microscopic mites that can affect children and adults alike. Dr. Alvarado, what can you tell us about scabies?

Dr. Alvarado
Well, Dr. Connolly, the tiny mites that cause scabies burrow into the skin's upper layers and cause a very itchy rash. Once a person is infected, it's easy for them to spread scabies to others around them.

Although a scabies infection can be extremely uncomfortable, it's typically a mild and highly treatable condition. However, the intense itching can tempt a child to scratch aggressively, which puts them at risk for a secondary skin infection, such as impetigo.
